is heading to new jersey. he'll join governor chris christie to see the devastation on the ground himself. meanwhile, governor romney, he's back on the trail in florida. there's still just six days until the election. what does that tell us about where the campaign stakes are really in play this morning. good morning from washington. it's wednesday, october 31st, 2012. happy halloween. this is "the daily rundown." i'm chuck todd. let's get right to may first reads of the morning. we're still a long way from recovery. today after hurricane sandy's devastation we're seeing the very first signs of a return to what may be some normalcy as millions attempt to put the pieces back together. this hour new york city mayor michael bloomberg will ring the opening bell at the new york stock exchange which plans to be fully operational despite blackouts and flooding in lower manhattan. two of the area's major airports, jfk and newark in new jersey have opened with some limited service this morning. but new york's laguardia airport remains closed after major flooding. overall, nearly 19,000 flights can

of the city's historic boardwalk was washed away by the storm. the state's governor chris christie saying any rescue operations will have to wait until sunrise. people along delaware's coastline have filled emergency shelters after the state's governor, jack markil asking for evaluation. firefighters say four unoccupied buildings have collapsed. no one was injured. at least 2 million people have lost power. five deaths have been report in new york state with deaths reported in new jersey, pennsylvania, connecticut, maryland and west virginia. trains, subways and bridges shut down. at least two major commuter tunnels and some subway tracks have been flooded. airlines have cancelled so far, at least 12,000 flights because of sandy. this afternoon, president obama said officials t after the stor. >> we have prepositioned assets so that fema personnel are working closely with state and local governments. we're making sure that food and water and emergency generation is available for those communities that are going to be hardest hit. transportation is going to be tied up for a long time. and prob

. governor chris christie says it will be eight days at the very least before that power is restored. president obama is coming to new jersey tomorrow to see the devastation firsthand with governor christie along with fema representatives and you know, right now, we can see pictures. we see the pictures of the iconic boardwalk. ripped up and the wood strewn across the streets. we see the downtowns of these communities inundated with sand and ocean water. and of course, we see those shots of the ferris wheel actually on these piers partially submerged in the water. it really is an appear okay apocalyptic scene on the jersey shore. obviously the cost in terms of damage in the billions and that's what fema and the president, of course, will be looking to lend a hand with tomorrow. >> jennifer: t.j., has everybody on the ground been accounted for? >> reporter: well, all i can tell you is that you know, those searches continue. many of the firefighters and the police, their own headquarters, many of them flooded. were f
